The regular stop for cyclists and hikers

The Hondón Valley is prime terrain for bike and boot: quiet roads, rolling climbs and farm tracks among almonds and vines. And every good terrain needs a good stop.

That stop has been Mesón El Retiro in La Canalosa for years. Ask the clubs that pull up a chair here every week.

Before the ride: coffee from 9:00

El Retiro opens Tuesday to Sunday at 9:00 — in time for a coffee at the bar before the peloton rolls out or the walk begins. Park your bike outside the door, where car parking is free too.

After the ride: a table that can handle hunger

On weekdays a homemade menú del día awaits: starter, main and homemade dessert or coffee — exactly the fuel after 80 kilometres or a day in the hills. At weekends, tapas and the charcoal grill.

Coming as a group? Call ahead (+34 965 48 01 87) or WhatsApp (+34 616 88 67 50) and the long table will be set when you roll in.

Routes that pass the door

La Canalosa sits at the centre of the valley: the loops towards Hondón de las Nieves, Hondón de los Frailes, Algueña, Pinoso, La Romana and Aspe pass by naturally. Walkers will find quiet farm tracks among the almond terraces all around the village.

In January and February you ride and walk through almond blossom — the most beautiful weeks of the valley's year.
